THE Illawarra under 12 representative cricket team proved itself among the best in the state by making the semi-finals of the junior carnival in Lismore.

Fourteen teams from NSW and Queensland converged on Lismore in early January, showcasing some of the best young talent in the junior ranks.

Illawarra, coached by Andrew Stewart and sponsored by Northern Star, won all three of their pool matches, before losing to Central Coast in the semi-finals.

Illawarra's first match of the tournament against Tamworth was played in extreme 45-degree temperatures with opening bowler Daniel Butler claiming man-of-the-match honours with 4-9, while Hayden MacRae top-scored with 34.

The second match between Illawarra and Hunter Valley was close, with Illawarra (7-93) winning by just four runs.

Hayden MacRae again top-scored with 27 runs (retired), while Jackson Stewart scored 12 runs and Liam Faughlin, Flynn Ogilvie, Lochlan Patterson and Rahil Verma all took two wickets each.

Illawarra (5-129) beat Beenleigh-Logan (63) in the third match with Rahil Verma spinning his side to victory with 6-14 as player of the game.

Co-captains Jackson Stewart and Flynn Ogilvie both retired at 25.
